Oaxaca, Mexico is world renowned for its 'Alebrijes', or Copal wood carvings created entirely by hand.
From a relatively unknown folk art to the what is now an internationally recoginized art form the wood carvers of Oaxaca are delighting and surprising us with their whimsical expressive designs in radiant colors.
Each figure is carved by hand from the wood of the copal tree, with simple household knives.
In a number of families the husband is doing the carving while the women are doing the detailed brilliant painting using acrylic paints.
The end result is a one-of-a-kind work of art.
The skill and artistry of Oaxacan carving is traditionally passed from generation to generation, with talented family members developing and fostering their own special styles along the way.
No two artists and no two Oaxacan wood carvings are ever exactly alike.
