Common causes are using an incandescent bulb which creates heat, direct sunlight and heat from a furnace. Heat, dryness causes the rawhide to tighten until it splits to relieve the pressure.
Because of this, there is no guarantee on shade life and once rawhide splits, there isn't any thing that can be done.
